go behind the scenes of one of Bluey’s biggest moments from 2024 with Melanie Zanetti, Dave McCormack, Costa Kassab and Jasmine Moody.

In April, Bluey’s 28 minute special, ‘The Sign‘, premiered on ABC Kids and Disney+. ‘The Sign’ told the story of the Heeler house going up for sale and the wedding of Bluey’s God Mother Frisky and her Uncle Rad.

In an exclusive treat for Bluey’s Christmas Countdown, take an exclusive look behind the scenes with Storyboard Artist Jasmine Moody, Lead Art Director Costa Kassab and the voices of Bandit and Chilli, Dave McCormack and Melanie Zanetti.

storyboards

While Bluey scripts are being written, artists work on early drawings of what happens within the episode, called storyboards. Editors then cut the storyboards together into an animatic – which are like flip-books that play out the episode through key frames.

Watch below as Storyboard Artist Jasmine Moody breaks down this process for ‘The Sign’.

scene focus: mount coo-tha

In an previously unreleased extract from their Bluey.tv interview, actors Melanie Zanetti (Bluey’s Mum, Chilli) and Dave McCormack (Bluey’s Dad, Bandit) reflect on their favourite scene from ‘The Sign’ – a top of Mount Coo-tha. Read their commentary and watch an exclusive animatic below.

Melanie Zanetti (Chilli): It was my favourite scene to record. We’re at Mount Coo-tha and Mum expresses that she doesn’t want to leave the house either and that she’s been trying to be strong for the girls – (Oh my gosh, I’m going to cry!) – and it hit me so hard! Parents spend so much of their lives dealing with their own stuff, and having to put on a brave face and be strong and create the adventure for the kids. It’s such a moment of vulnerability.

.

Dave McCormack (Bandit): It’s incredible, it’s such a brave thing for a TV show to do, to show the vulnerability of the parents, have them show their emotions – It’s pretty incredible.

Melanie Zanetti (Chilli): Joe (Brumm) was really particular with that moment, we actually re-recorded it. We’d done a seperate session and he brought me back in and said “Can you do it almost crying?”. It was very particular, but a very special moment.

art Direction

Before anything gets animated, a lot of work and time is dedicated to designing everything you see including characters, places and more. Join Bluey’s Lead Art Director, Costa Kassab, as he breaks down the Art Direction of ‘The Sign‘.
