Sticks up, teeth in – it’s time to get your granny on!

These naturally coloured cookies are as bright and bold as Janet and Rita’s dance moves! Sweet, simple, and a little bit silly, they’re guaranteed to bring a smile. Follow along with this recipe by Ella’s Play Bakes.

Note: A grown-up should handle all preparation and baking, but budding chefs can help – under supervision, of course!

Method:

Step One: making the dough

  1. Preheat the oven
Heat your oven to 150°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar together on medium speed for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the wet ingredients
Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth, about 1 minute.
  4. Form the dough
With the mixer on low, add the flours and salt. Mix until a loose, crumbly dough forms.
  5. Divide and colour the dough
Decide how many pairs of Granny cookie glasses you want to make (Janet, Gladys, or Madge) and divide the dough into that many portions. You can make one, two, or the whole Granny gang. Tint each portion with its natural colour: blueberry powder for Janet’s cookie glasses (the most iconic!), black cocoa for Gladys’s, and butterfly pea powder for Madge’s. Knead gently until the colour is evenly combined.
  6. Shape the cookie glasses
Roll out each portion of coloured dough between two sheets of baking paper until about ½ cm thick. Referencing the images of the glasses below, (please include an image of each pair) use round cookie cutters in different sizes to cut out the frames and shape the cookie glasses (just like in the video). Be sure to press all the pieces together firmly, otherwise they might come apart while baking.

Step Two: baking the dough

  1. Bake
Transfer the cookie glasses to your prepared tray. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let them cool completely on the tray.
  2. Add the lenses (optional)
Now for the Granny specs magic! Once the cookie glasses are fully cooled, melt isomalt according to the packet instructions (grown-ups only—this part gets super hot!). Carefully pour the melted isomalt into the “lens” holes of each cookie frame. Leave to set until clear and shiny.
  3. Play, then munch
Pop on your Granny cookie glasses and do the floss before crunching into your colourful creations!
